Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
Today in class we had a veteran teacher come speak. She was showing us a lot of games she likes to use with kids. One was Cash Cab. She (intentionally) picked a student, and she (intentionally) had a question they didn’t know. She said, “Oh well I guess you’ll have to phone a friend. I’m going to let you call your mom.” Our entire class goes wild. She gave the girl her cell phone and asked her to put it on speaker. The girl calls her mom, tells her the question, and the mom answers it. We’re all amazed because it’s a hard question.
Turns out she planned the whole thing. Right down to calling the girl’s mom yesterday and telling her when we were going to call and what the question and answer were.
What a great way to connect the community to your classroom, involve parents, and foster some pride in kids for their parents. You can literally call anyone. The superintendent, the principle, the custodian. It was a VERY fun activity for everyone involved.
Also, not a bad way to catch a troublesome kid off guard. Have them call the principle.
I wish we could have done this a few times
Cute game!
I love this “phone a friend” classroom activity… and it IS a great way to involve parents in their child’s education!

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Now, if I only got cell service in my classroom, or if only we were trusted with phone...
Wow! That sounds like a fun thing to do. :D I might modify this to include in a group game. :)
