Tumblr teachers,
I finally have my first interview! It’s tomorrow morning for a seventh grade science position. I’m SOO nervous and excited. As for today, I woke up this morning with a stomach bug. Cool, right? I’m pretty bummed I won’t get to go shopping for a new outfit. I fully plan on being well for the interview. To the point. I must practice. What questions did you get in an...

Phone A Friend
Today in class we had a veteran teacher come speak.  She was showing us a lot of games she likes to use with kids.  One was Cash Cab.  She (intentionally) picked a student, and she (intentionally) had a question they didn’t know.  She said, “Oh well I guess you’ll have to phone a friend.  I’m going to let you call your mom.”  Our entire class goes wild.  She gave the...

QR Code Creator →
What if each code linked you to a page of text (something you can set up on this website), and it told you where to go for the next clue.  What a technologically savvy scavenger hunt! You could group kids in pairs or 4s depending on how many smart phones there are in the bunch.

What's your favorite thing about Tumblr? →
Polleverywhere.com  Free, text in, live polls.  Multiple choice option for more predictable answers.  Download as a powerpoint slide, for Prezi, or use on this webpage. Are you okay with kids getting their phones out in class?

Common Core
Hate to say it, but I watched a video on the Common Core today, and they’re focused on making kids ready for college and careers.  They want kids to be able to read informational text, which is what we all read anyway.   I’m math, and they studied countries who are better than us at math, and they’ve adopted a “less is more” approach.  I’m all about this. ...

Blogger
Some guest speakers to our class have almost convinced me to switch my blogging life over. I think there may be more of an education community there.   Anyone else on there? Anyone have a compelling reason to stay or switch?

Hey guys!
My mentor teacher just called me to let me know that a principle called HER to ask about ME because they’re planning to set up an INTERVIEW!! It hasn’t happened yet, but this is the first time EVER in my LIFE that anyone has considered me as a qualified, professional candidate for a BIG GIRL JOB!  I consider that worth celebrating in itself. Stay tuned.

Priorities
mrs-hill: I’m so fed up with people going to the orthodontist, etc, during MY End of Course Test review time!  I mean, what are these people thinking?  So I asked my second period class, after my rant was over, “What’s more important - doing well on the EOC or straight teeth?”.  The entire class responded, “Straight Teeth!”

When are we ever going to use this?
Just like you go to sports practice to exercise your muscles, you come to class to exercise your brain.  In practice you learn a lot of plays so that you will be prepared for anything the other team throws at you. You may or may not use every single one in the big game.  In this class, I’m going to teach you many things you will use and many things you won’t.  Since I can’t see...

Portfolio or no portfolio?
We don’t make them in my education program, but since I’m applying out of state I’m wondering if I should have a little something extra to show them who I am as a teacher? I have a 60 page unit plan and several observations forms. What do you include in one?

Mockingjay
I just finished it today, and I have to say I’m disappointed. For two main reasons.  Why did Katniss turn into Bella Swan? I realize she has been through a lot, and I would be okay with a few human moments of panic and grief, but she sulks for the entire book. She’s negative. She gives up and considers suicide.  Katniss is supposed to be a heroine.  She shouldn’t be whining...
