Train Wreck - No Pictures, Please: Teaching.... →
jbizzle329:
sometimes (most of the time) it’s hard.
Lately I’ve noticed a little bit of a lower moral in the education tag. I see first year teachers and veteran teachers frustrated, sad, and just plain tired. Don’t get me wrong, I see positives about teaching and great ideas in almost every other post, and…

How to avoid teacher burnout by Michael Linsin
Teacher burnout, which happens when stress and mental fatigue become more than occasional companions, strikes many thousands of teachers every year.
Reports suggest roughly half of all teachers quit within five years.
And it’s no wonder. Burnout…

Stress
I’m constantly torn between the feeling that I should be doing something else and the extreme need to rest.

Why do I want to teach?
The application essay question that I have been considering for the past few days. Oh, how to not sound cliche..

By the way,
My final observation went SMASHINGLY!
We were doing surface area, so I had a different rectangular prism (cereal boxes, etc.) for each pair because that’s how our desks are. The kids cut from those big rolls of colorful paper that every school has (No idea what they’re called?) a rectangle for each of the 6 faces and taped it on. They found the total surface area by adding up...

Final observation tomorrow!
I’m going to create and print my lesson plan sometime tomorrow before my supervisor gets there. Sounds like I’m finally becoming a real teacher!

I'm not saying I'm just saying
I watched Ancient Aliens, and I’m a sucker for conspiracy theories. But really, HOW
How do you get these rocks which weigh TONS into place like this? Much less cut them to size?
HOW do you cut with this kind of precision? We’re still PRE-wheel here.
HOW do you get blocks the size of cars into place without the wheel? They made a good point, if...

If I could leave my students with one thing.
I teach 6th grade math. And the one thing I would love to leave them with, if nothing else, would be the ability to look at a problem and ask themselves, “Does this answer even make sense?”
You should just know that 20% of 50 cannot be 84. Or that a 7% tax on $45 can’t be $20.
I would love for my students to have this kind of number sense, or maybe it’s just patience...

Oh yes I did.
Today third period rolls around and I have my kids working on standardized testing review. We’re doing one problem at a time with the clickers and after each one I am able to bring up a graph to see how many people got it right. I’ve given them a 100% challenge. If the whole class gets it right I’ll use fun colors when we work them out (I use a tablet to write on the projector)...

It happened today.
I lost my patience with a class. After about 5 times of telling them to be quiet, I realized they don’t respect me. When my mentor teacher is in the room, they’re quiet. Finally the poop hit the fan in 4th period after a LOONG week and I let it rip:
You know what? *class gets silent* I am clearly approaching teaching from the wrong perspective. I thought that if I was nice to...

Another lesson plan
A mere 24 hours after I submitted my 11 day unit plan, I have to begin working on YET ANOTHER lesson plan for my second observation on Tuesday.
Needless to say, I DON’T WANNA!
